This study established evidence on the relevance of pesticides in water bodies in relation to other stressors — providing further understanding on the environmental implications of agrochemical use on biodiversity in European lowland streams.
- Biodiversity maps provide insights on Natura 2000 network in two Spanish regions The Natura 2000 protected area network is one of the EU’s flagship biodiversity conservation initiatives. This study compares the network in two autonomous communities in Spain against maps based on areas of importance for biodiversity. The researchers report that the current network aligns well with priority areas, but there are some opportunities for improved connectivity.
- Wolf population expansion - a novel approach to promote tolerance between varied stakeholder groups, Italy Conflict between people and wolves in Italy has led to stakeholders often taking antagonistic positions. This study applies a consultative process intended to reduce social tensions while achieving some degree of consensus on potential actions. The researchers report positive outcomes in terms of identifying agreed management options and promoting communication and tolerance between stakeholder groups.
- Restoring the Baltic Sea may require substantial reduction in nutrient input and lengthy time spans More than 97% of the Baltic Sea is affected by excess nutrient content (eutrophication). Restoration efforts have set reduction targets for inputs of nitrogen compounds from rivers and the atmosphere. This study estimates the reductions required and time frame needed to achieve good ecological status. The researchers suggest that, when models include nitrogen exchange between water and sediment, reductions of over 50% and time spans of many decades may be required.
- Climate-induced shifts in species distribution could impact the management of internationally shared fish stocks Climate change will affect the distribution of many commercially harvested fish and shellfish species, including stocks that occur across national boundaries and are subject to international management agreements (i.e. 'transboundary' fish stocks). This study models how the ranges of transboundary stocks are likely to move across national sea boundaries and the high seas. The researchers find that shifts may already be happening and could affect 45% of the world's internationally shared fish stocks by the end of the current century.
- Land use changes in the Mediterranean may be triggering large weather shifts Land use changes over the last century in the Mediterranean area may be sparking shifts in weather patterns locally, across Europe, and around the globe, suggests a new study. The findings bring to light new complexities that can be integrated into climate models and predictions.
- Soil and Water: a larger perspective - November 2015 Land use changes over time have altered relations between soils and water cycles throughout the world. Soils have been lost and degraded, and the closely interlinked processes of soils and water have become an urgent issue for European policymakers. This Thematic Issue aims to provide a review of new research into the links between soil and water issues in Europe, including a message that the soil-water links must be considered at their proper spatial scales.
- Research into root systems: key for long-term crop management Water scarcity is an important cause of low crop yields worldwide. Yields could be significantly improved by focusing attention on unproductive water losses and improving retention of plant-available water in soils, and particularly the largely unexplored interactions between soils and roots. A new review of scientific literature sets out key soil management measures for crops under drought conditions.
- New data on soil erosion by water reveals Mediterranean at highest flood risk Comprehensive data analysed in a new study show how extensive rainfall can erode soils across the EU and Switzerland, revealing that Mediterranean regions have the highest risk for erosive events and floods. The resulting dataset can also be used for disaster planning and relief.
- Integrating animal and crop production can reduce nutrient leaching from agricultural fields Nutrient leaching, the movement of plant nutrients from soil to water, can have negative effects on aquatic ecosystems due to eutrophication, which reduces the oxygen available in water, causing species and habitat loss. Ecological Recycling Agriculture (ERA), which is based on ecological principles and integrates crop production and animal husbandry, may limit this effect. This study investigated the impact of ERA on agricultural fields in Finland, showing that the practice can reduce nitrogen leaching and may help to achieve agricultural nitrogen-reduction targets.
- Who should pay for best management practices to reduce soil erosion? Worsening soil erosion in north-western Europe may be the result of a switch from traditional dairy farming to cash crops. However, even if all dairy farming ceased, reductions in runoff of up to 76% could be achieved if best agricultural practices are employed, at a cost of approximately €45 per hectare for the first three years, new research from the Austreberthe watershed in France suggests.
- More than one third of soils studied in southwest England are highly degraded An extensive field investigation discovered that 38% of soils in southwest England show signs of enhanced surface water runoff due to soil degradation. The study also revealed which types of fields and soils are linked to the most or least degradation.
- Artificial wetlands on farmland help to prevent soil loss and recapture agricultural by-products Small field wetlands are a simple and effective way to reduce soil erosion and nutrient pollution, recent research suggests. The authors adapted Norwegian designs for the UK environment and created a series of small rectangular lakes on the edges of agricultural fields. After three years, the wetlands had prevented tonnes of soil from leaving the land, and helped alleviate some of the nutrient run-off that would have affected neighbouring waterways.
- Flood risk from modern agricultural practices can be mitigated with interventions In the face of substantial evidence that modern land use management practices have increased runoff at the local scale, a new study reveals changes in local land use management practices can reduce the risk of local flooding. However, there is little evidence so far that these local increases in runoff culminate in large-scale flooding effects. To address this lack of evidence, the researchers present a model that maps the downstream rate of flow back to its source areas.
- New method of developing agri-environment schemes proposes €3 million saving in Germany A method for developing more cost-effective agri-environment schemes is outlined in a recent study. The procedure can be used over large areas, accounts for hundreds of management regimes and several different endangered species. The model is one of the first to account for the timing of measures and, when applied to Saxony in Germany, proposed savings of over €3 million, while also improving some conservation outcomes.
- Car-free cities: healthier citizens No cities are yet fully car-free, but many have managed or plan to restrict access to city centres for privately owned combustion-engine passenger cars. Health benefits will come from reduced traffic-related air pollution, less noise and lower levels of heat emitted from vehicles. The greatest health benefit, however, is likely to come from increased physical activity as people walk, cycle and move to catch public transport, according to a review of the potential health benefits of car-free cities.
- Straw covering on soil can increase crop yields and improve the efficiency of water use Straw from previous harvests can be used to help increase crop yields and improve the efficiency of water use in arid regions, finds a new study from China. By testing different techniques to improve water efficiency, the researchers found that the most effective method involved using straw to cover the soil when growing maize and wheat together in the same growing season.
- No-tillage management of olive groves can improve soil structure while maintaining yield Non-conservative tillage techniques, such as milling and harrowing, are the most common way to manage soil in Mediterranean olive orchards. A new study confirms the value of alternative methods based on the use of spontaneous cover crops which can significantly improve soil structure and reduce erosion whilst maintaining yields.
- Rejuvenating arid badlands: from barren slopes to living forest in 80 years A reforestation project has revitalised its surroundings just 80 years after its inception. In the late 1920s, the Saldaña badlands in northern Spain were a barren region, with a thin layer of intensely weathered soil, and only 5% vegetation cover. Now that cover has increased dramatically to 87%, the soil quality is improving, and the water flow in the area has stabilised, bringing greater environmental security to the local community.
- What makes an urban neighbourhood more resilient to flood? New assessment tool trialled in Hamburg A method for assessing urban neighbourhoods’ resilience to flooding has been presented in a recent study. The method identifies features of urban landscapes that contribute to three elements of flood resilience: resistance, absorption and recovery. In a German case study, the tool shows that the features which make a waterfront neighbourhood of Hamburg more flood resilient include high bridges, open public spaces and flood-protected basements.
- Herbicide run-off reduced by grassy ditches in Italy — recommended for agri-environment schemes Pesticides used on agricultural land can leach into nearby surface water; this is called run-off and can harm aquatic ecosystems. This study evaluated the potential of ditches to reduce run-off, using Italy’s Po Valley as a case study. Grassy ditches were able to significantly reduce the concentration of herbicides, even during extreme flooding. The researchers therefore suggest that the promotion of vegetated ditches via agri-environment schemes would be beneficial for pesticide mitigation.
- Bumblebees pollinate urban gardens better than agricultural land A recent study has found that bumblebees in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany are more successful at pollinating urban areas than agricultural land. Urban areas also had higher flower diversity and more potential nesting areas for bees compared to agricultural areas. However, the abundance of bee parasites was also higher in urban areas, although this was not found to negatively impact on pollination. This demonstrates the value of urban green spaces as habitat for pollinators.
- Analysis of farmers’ social networks identifies important stakeholders for biodiversity conservation Stakeholder support is essential to the success of environmental policies. A recent study has identified stakeholders that can promote biodiversity in European agricultural landscapes. The researchers found farmers were the most influential group of stakeholders, as they make the final decisions on land use. In turn, farmers are influenced in their decisions by a number of actors whose influence is perceived differently on a local and regional level.
- Estimated 1 455 tonnes of plastic floating in the Mediterranean A rough total of 1 455 tonnes of floating plastic is present across the Mediterranean, estimates a new study. Researchers gathered floating plastics using trawl nets and found that microplastics with a surface area of around 1 square milimetre (mm2) were the most abundant size of plastic particles found.
- Nitrous oxide could be removed from the atmosphere with simultaneous generation of renewable energy Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant. A new study proposes tackling both problems by removing N2O from the atmosphere using a combination of two innovative technologies — photocatalytic breakdown of the N2O to nitrogen and oxygen, and this within a solar chimney power plant that generates renewable electricity. Although some way off from commercial development, the researchers say this approach is feasible, and they outline how these two technologies can be integrated to reduce the climate impact and polluting effects of N2O emissions.
- Herbicide found in German estuaries, transported to the Baltic Sea Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, able to kill a broad range of plants ('weeds') that compete with crops. This study used a validated method to assess its presence in 10 German estuaries that lead to the Baltic Sea. All but one was contaminated with glyphosate, and all were contaminated with its metabolite AMPA. The researchers recommend risk assessments for these chemicals in the Baltic Sea and other marine environments.
- Sustainable drainage systems: new ecosystem services-based evaluation methods Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) could be made better for biodiversity and local people with the help of two new evaluation methods presented by a recent study. The methods, which assess the value of SuDS sites for wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, recreation and education, are described by the study’s authors as cost-effective, quick and reliable, and could help designers plan and retrofit SuDS that are wildlife-friendly and socially inclusive.
- Household sources of biocidal active substances assessed Sources of biocidal active substances (BAS) in common household products have been assessed in a new study from Germany. These could potentially be released into wastewater and may be toxic to wildlife and humans. The main household sources of BAS were found to be washing, cleaning and personal-care products, which together accounted for over 90% of the observations of BAS in the products found in homes surveyed by the researchers.
- Nitrification inhibitors — climate change mitigation tool recommended by the IPCC – may be less effective than previously thought Nitrification inhibitors are thought to mitigate climate change by reducing emissions of nitrous oxide — a potent greenhouse gas — from land. However, they may not be as effective as once thought, a new study suggests. The researchers found that, while inhibitors decrease emissions of nitrous oxide, they can increase emissions of ammonia — which is later converted to nitrous oxide. They recommend these effects are considered when evaluating inhibitors as a mitigation technology.
- How to increase the uptake of environmentally friendly fertilisers in Germany Fertilisers have boosted crop yields but at the same time can have negative effects on the environment. This study investigates fertiliser ‘ecoinnovations’, with reduced environmental impact, in Germany. By gathering the views of experts, producers, traders and farmers, the researchers make recommendations for increasing uptake of environmentally friendly fertilisers, including increasing knowledge and awareness among traders and farmers.
- Ocean acidification — caused by climate change — likely to reduce the survival rate of Atlantic cod larvae The impact of ocean acidification — caused by increased carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions dissolving in sea water — on Atlantic cod larvae has been assessed in a new study. The researchers estimate that, under scenarios which might be reached at the end of the century, ocean acidification could double the mortality rate of cod larvae, reducing replenishment of juvenile fish into cod fisheries to 24% of previous recruitment.
- New system to convert food waste into fertiliser for greenhouse use gives potential 95% reduction in CO2 emissions A new method of processing food waste into fertiliser has been outlined in a recent study. The process uses a digester system with microorganisms to break down organic waste into fertiliser. The resultant fertiliser was used in a low-energy greenhouse to produce a range of food crops. The method is a potential way to utilise food waste and reduce the energy consumption of food production as part of a circular economy.
- High lead exposure for griffon vultures in Spain correlates with soil lead and ammunition from game hunting Maps of the risk of griffon vultures’ exposure to lead in north-eastern Spain have been produced in a new study. High-risk places are mountainous areas where there are high levels of bioavailable sources of lead in the soil, but also where game hunting is prevalent, and carcasses scavenged by the birds may contain lead ammunition.
- Switching to LED street lighting could alter urban bat behaviour The effect on bats of the replacement of mercury lamps with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in street lighting has been investigated in a recent study. Artificial light affects bat species differently and the activity of species normally more sensitive to light were affected less by the new LED street lamps than by traditional mercury lamps. Use of LEDs may, therefore, help to reduce the impacts of outdoor lighting on light-sensitive bats, if used at an appropriate level.
- Legal analysis finds REACH authorisation rules on imported substances of ‘very high concern’ would not violate WTO law The EU would not be breaking World Trade Organization (WTO) rules if it chose to extend REACH’s authorisation scheme on substances of very high concern (SVHC) to products imported to Europe, a recent legal analysis concludes. At present, the scheme — which is effectively a ban on SVHC, with some exceptions — applies only to products made within the European Economic Area (EEA).
- Better predictions of climate change impact on wildlife thanks to genetically informed modelling The effects of climate change on the distribution of species can be predicted more accurately by considering the genetic differences between different groups of the same species, a new study suggests. The researchers found that a computer model which incorporated genetic information on different groups of a US tree species was up to 12 times more accurate in predicting tree locations than a non-genetically informed model.
- Which factors make drugs persistent? A look at sulphonamides in Polish rivers Up to 90% of consumed drugs enter the environment. This may have negative effects on wildlife, especially when the drugs take long periods to break down. This study assessed the breakdown of sulphonamides — a class of antibacterials — in samples from two rivers in Poland. The results showed that sulphamethoxazole, a common veterinary antibiotic, was the most persistent and that various factors inhibit degradation, including low temperatures, heavy metal pollution and low pH.
- Banned pesticides continue to affect toxicity in streams Many toxic pesticides have been banned by the EU, however some can remain in the environment for many decades. Aquatic invertebrates are particularly vulnerable to pesticides, which can alter their feeding behaviour, growth and mobility. New research has found that persistent pesticides can increase toxicity in streams by up to 10 000 times compared to the residues of currently used pesticides. The researchers recommend these be taken into account when calculating overall toxicity.
- QUICKScan: a quick, participatory method for exploring environmental policy problems Policymakers often have to make decisions under great complexity, uncertainty and time pressure. A new study presents a support tool for the first stage of policymaking: identifying and exploring alternatives to solve problems. The software tool, called QUICKScan, increases the speed of this process and combines the input of many stakeholders in participatory workshops. It has been applied 70 times in 20 different countries, for a wide range of environmental policy issues.
- Half of the land area in Europe is within 1.5 kilometres of transport infrastructure, with large-scale impact on wildlife Transport infrastructure is so widespread in Europe that half of the land area is within 1.5 kilometres (km) of paved roads and railway lines, researchers have calculated. The researchers found that in Spain, transport infrastructure has an impact on the abundance of birds in almost half of the country and is affecting the abundance of mammals across almost all of the land area.
- Solar park impacts on microclimate, plants and greenhouse gas emissions A UK solar park has been found to change the local microclimate, reports recently published research. Moreover, the microclimate coupled with management activities had an impact on greenhouse gas emissions and plant-community diversity and productivity under the solar panels. The study’s authors say their research provides a starting point for considering how to improve solar-park design in order to deliver co-benefits for biodiversity and farming, and minimise any negative environmental effects.
- Green buildings: researchers call for fuller environmental assessment Over half of a low-energy building’s environmental impact occurred before it was even occupied, a new case study from Italy calculates. The researchers recommend expanding the environmental assessment of buildings from just the operational stage of a building’s life, when it is in use, to include production and transport of materials, construction activities and building maintenance. A wide range of environmental impacts should also be considered, they argue, and not just energy use.
- Europe could suffer major shellfish production losses due to ocean acidification Ocean acidification threatens marine ecosystems worldwide, but economic assessments of its impact are lacking. A recent study has predicted the future cost of ocean acidification on mollusc production in Europe and showed that the highest economic impacts would be in France, Italy and Spain. For Europe overall, the annual damage could be in the region of €0.9 billion by 2100.
- Risk of silver nanoparticles to terrestrial plants is low, but increased by chlorine Silver nanoparticles are used in a range of household products. This study investigated the risk to plants of these nanoparticles in soil, showing that risk was overall low but increased when soils contained high levels of chlorine. The researchers, therefore, suggest that the risk of silver nanoparticles to plants may increase in salty soils or those irrigated with poor-quality water. These findings could be important for future risk assessments.
- Europe's rivers ‘highly contaminated’ with long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids Long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are persistent chemicals with proven toxic effects. This study estimated the emissions and concentrations of two such chemicals, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in 11 of Europe's most populated river catchments. Estimated emissions were lowest in the Thames and highest in the Rhine, while the EU environmental quality standard for PFOS was exceeded in all rivers. This study provides a picture of PFAAs contamination in rivers across Europe, and makes recommendations for achieving reductions.
- Diverse plant communities improve soil structure and, therefore, ecosystem services Plant diversity improves soil stability, the results of a greenhouse experiment and a long-term field study show. This study, which covered a range of different soil types, is one of the first to investigate the effects of plant diversity on soil structure, which is important for provision of ecosystem services, such as carbon storage and the mitigation of excessive run-off. The findings could help tackle the problem of soil degradation, the researchers suggest.
- Understanding uncertainty in air-quality modelling with new framework A recent study develops a framework for implementing IAMs using the Lombardy region of Italy as a case study. Researchers have run an uncertainty and sensitivity analysis with an environmental model, specifically with an Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) for air quality, demonstrating how model components are sources of uncertainty in the output of an integrated assessment. Policy responses should therefore consider uncertainty and sensitivity when developing measures to improve air quality.
- Species diversity throughout the food chain maintains multiple ecosystem services more effectively Biodiversity’s contribution to ecosystem services in grasslands — at different levels of the food chain (known as trophic levels1) — has been assessed in a new study. Higher species diversity across trophic levels — particularly for plants, insects and soil microbial decomposers — is important for the provision of multiple ecosystem services related to food production, recreational benefits, or climate regulation. Species diversity across different trophic groups was also found to be just as important in controlling ecosystem functioning as the management intensity of grasslands and environmental factors, such as climate or soil type.
- BirdLife International’s ‘Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas’ well covered by Natura 2000 in Europe but potential to extend network The coverage of ‘Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas’ (IBAs) in relation to Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for birds in the EU has been assessed in a new study. Overall, 66% of the IBA network is covered by SPAs. SPAs were found to cover 23% of the distributions of 435 EU bird species as well as 25% of the distributions of mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
- Volume of leachate and environmental impact from landfills reduced — but legacy effects remain Landfill leachate is the liquid that seeps through or out of waste deposits in landfill sites. EU regulations, such as the Landfill Directive1, have significantly reduced the volume of leachate produced, a study on leachate management in Ireland has found. Leachate, mainly from younger landfills in Ireland is, however, stronger since implementation of the legislation, and the researchers say the future treatment of leachate under stricter environmental protection regulations will continue to be a long-term concern for landfill operators and regulators.
- More coordinated legislation needed to ensure the Good Environmental Status of European seas A range of legislation, including the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), is designed to ensure the ‘Good Environmental Status’ (GES) of EU seas by 2020. Researchers have assessed the MSFD in relation to existing maritime policies, concluding that coordination between directives is important to achieve GES.
- Drivers of renewable energy innovation in the EU The effects of market regulation and environmental policy on eight types of renewable energy in the EU are identified in a study which examines nearly three decades’ worth of data. The researchers found that reducing entry barriers is a major driver of renewable energy innovation and that the ability of environmental policy to promote renewable energy innovation depends on the technology; for example, quota systems appear to work better with older technologies.
- Review confirms climate change is threatening many ecosystem services Climate change is having mixed — but mostly negative — impacts on ecosystem services, suggest data analysed by a new study. The research, which brings together the findings of over 100 other studies, found that 59% of reported impacts of climate change on ecosystem services are negative, while just 13% are positive. However, the method of research was shown to strongly influence whether impacts are reported as positive or negative, with expert opinion studies far more negative than other types of study.
- Additional legislation and enforcement needed to protect threatened and rare reptiles from the pet trade in Europe? The prominent role of EU countries in the international trade of reptiles for pets, including many rare and illegally traded species, is highlighted in a recent study. The researchers call for better enforcement and tighter legislation to control the trade, which is a major threat to global biodiversity. In particular the researchers appeal for legislation to be passed for species protected in their native range countries, which can currently be freely traded in the EU if they are not subject to international trade conventions such as CITES.
- Combinations of veterinary antibiotics may harm algae Combinations of antibiotics used in veterinary medicine could harm the growth of algal communities when they pass into water bodies from treated livestock, according to recent European research. Algae play vital roles in ecosystems by cycling nutrients and producing energy from photosynthesis; veterinary use of antibiotics should, therefore, be monitored in the environment, including for any biological impacts on algal species, the study recommends.
- Waste materials are an underused resource in the construction of Europe’s roads Recycled waste material could play a major role in the construction of roads in Europe, bringing both environmental and economic benefits. A new study proposes a scenario where 50% of the asphalt for Europe’s roads consists of recycled materials, leading to significant reductions in costs, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Oilseed rape genes transfer from inside to outside of crop fields: study could aid GM risk assessment This study is one of few to assess the genetic diversity of crops in an agroecosystem over several years. Researchers analysed the genetic makeup of oilseed rape plants within and outside crop fields over four years. They found similarity between cultivars of field plants in one year and those of feral plants (unplanted) in the following year. They also found persistence of the cultivars within the feral plants, which suggests that feral populations with genetically modified (GM) traits might result from persistent GM traits within field seed banks. The researchers say their findings could aid impact assessments of GM crops.
- High soil carbon in Natura 2000 sites brings potential for climate-smart conservation Natura 2000 sites have, on average, 10% more carbon in their topsoil than non-protected areas, according to new research. They also generally have lower economic value for agriculture. The results suggest that there is significant potential to develop win-win biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation efforts within the EU.
- European coastal regions at greatest risk from oil spills identified by new risk index European Atlantic countries are, in general, at higher risk of being affected by oil spills than Mediterranean and Baltic countries, with the United Kingdom most affected, according to new research. The study developed a new risk index for analysing the potential vulnerability of coastal regions to oil spills at sea.
- Can supermarkets encourage customers to cut food waste through social media? Analysis of UK campaign shows mixed results A study has evaluated three types of media campaign conducted by a large UK supermarket to encourage shoppers to reduce their food waste. These used social media, an e-newsletter and a print/digital magazine, respectively. Although they all appeared to lead to reductions in food waste to some extent, similar behavioural changes were also seen for customers who had not participated in any of the campaigns.
- Nanomaterial risk assessment frameworks and tools evaluated A recent study has evaluated frameworks and tools used in Europe to assess the potential health and environmental risks of manufactured nanomaterials. The study identifies a trend towards tools that provide protocols for conducting experiments, which enable more flexible and efficient hazard testing. Among its conclusions, however, it notes that no existing frameworks meet all the study’s evaluation criteria and calls for a new, more comprehensive framework.
- Noise abatement approaches As the sources and severity of noise pollution continue to grow, there is a need for new approaches to reduce exposure. This Future Brief looks at the complex and pervasive problem of noise pollution: a problem with no single solution, requiring a combination of short-, medium- and long-term approaches and careful consideration of the nature of the noise source.
- Livestock worming treatments can reduce seed germination of grassland species A common anti-parasitic drug used to control gastrointestinal worms in livestock has been shown to inhibit seed germination of three common grassland species. This recent study is the first to show that anthelmintics may negatively affect plant regeneration. The researchers say that treatments should be carefully timed in order to avoid the strongest impact of the drugs on germination and the consequential negative affect on grassland regeneration.
- Responding to floods in Europe: new framework assesses effectiveness of Flood Emergency Management Systems A new framework has been developed to assess how effective Flood Emergency Management Systems (FEMS) are in Europe. Examining FEMS in five European countries, this study highlights the strengths and weaknesses of existing systems and makes recommendations for improving their effectiveness, particularly in relation to institutional learning, community preparedness and recovery.

The researchers reached this conclusion with the use of an integrated risk-assessment method that accounts for environmental, economic and social factors within the 19 counties. They call for immediate action to protect the fishing industry against the effects of ocean acidification.
- Rapid and significant sea-level rise expected if global warming exceeds 2°C, with global variation The world could experience the highest ever global sea-level rise in the history of human civilisation if global temperature rises exceed 2 °C, predicts a new study. Under current carbon-emission rates, this temperature rise will occur around the middle of this century, with damaging effects on coastal businesses and ecosystems, while also triggering major human migration from low-lying areas. Global sea-level rise will not be uniform, and will differ for different points of the globe.
- Environmental DNA in rivers can assess broad-scale biodiversity Traces of animals’ DNA in the environment, known as environmental DNA (eDNA), can be monitored to paint a picture of biodiversity, new research shows. This study used eDNA to assess biodiversity in an entire river catchment in Switzerland. Importantly, the eDNA technique allowed the researchers to detect both aquatic and land-based species in river water, making it possible to assess biodiversity over a broad scale.
- The economic impact of climate change on European agriculture A new study has estimated how changes to climate might affect the value of European farmland. Based on data for over 41 000 farms, the results suggest that their economic value could drop by up to 32%, depending on the climate scenario considered. Farms in southern Europe are particularly sensitive to climate change and could suffer value losses of up to 9% per 1 °C rise. The researchers say policy, on water and land use, for example, will be crucial to help farmers adapt to climate change and mitigate economic losses.
- Nanoparticle release from self-cleaning cement: new study considers how much escapes into the environment, and how New figures on how much titanium dioxide nanomaterial (TiO2-NM) could be released into the environment from photocatalytic cement — a new type of self-cleaning cement — are presented in a recent study. Based on experimental test results, the researchers estimate that between 0.015% and 0.033% of photocatalytic cement’s TiO2-NM content could potentially escape over several years of cement use, depending on the level of cement porosity. The study could help inform environmental risk assessment of TiO2-NM, as well as safer design of nano-products (i.e. commercialised products incorporating nanomaterials).
- Nature-based flood management needs joined-up policy approach to manage benefits and trade-offs Natural water-retention measures, which ‘keep the rain where it falls’, have great potential to be used as part of flood-risk management plans. But their benefits for downstream urban areas can bring costs to the upstream agricultural areas where they are installed, a recent analysis explains. The researchers behind this analysis suggest that we need new and/or improved policies and institutions to oversee the trade-offs and benefits for agriculture and flood management, and a better scientific understanding of the measures’ likely impact on urban flood risk.
- Farmland abandonment risk highlighted in new UK study Traditional, high-nature-value (HNV) grasslands are at risk of being abandoned by farmers in the future — in turn, risking the wildlife they support, warns a new UK study. Farmers interviewed by the researchers had weak motivations to protect grasslands, as they felt that financial incentives for conservation are low and that traditional management practices are inconvenient. More dialogue between farmers and conservationists could be part of the solution, the study suggests.
- New light-based method for detecting and monitoring algal blooms Algal blooms in inland and marine waters could be detected and monitored more accurately in future, thanks to a new assessment method. Scientists have developed a new algorithm for sensors which identify emerging blooms of cyanobacteria based on the behaviour of light reflected by the algae’s pigment. Importantly, the algorithm may reduce uncertainty in estimations of algal concentrations by distinguishing between two different types of pigment.
- Which new low-carbon technologies can be developed and commercialised quickly? New research offers analysis A new study provides clues as to which innovative low-carbon technologies will successfully get onto the market quickly. The historical analysis of 16 energy technologies — from steam engines to wind power — found that the average length of a product’s ‘formative phase’ is 22 years. This important period of innovation in a technology’s development is shorter for products which do not need extensive new infrastructure or changes to user behaviour. The findings could help policymakers identify new technologies that can be deployed more rapidly to meet short-term environmental targets.
- Invasive black locust tree can have sustainable future despite biodiversity impacts The black locust tree can be economically valuable and offer certain environmental benefits, but its dominant and invasive nature in Europe can have an adverse impact on biodiversity. A recent study, which presents an overview of this species’ ecological and socio-economic impacts in Central Europe, recommends tolerating the tree in some areas and eradicating it in others, in order to balance its co-existence with people and nature.
- Decentralised supply of recycled water may save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions Reusing waste water for non-drinking uses in decentralised plumbing networks may improve the efficiency of water supply in urban areas, a new study has found. Modelling this approach in San Francisco, researchers found that, depending on the local geography, a decentralised water supply could lead to energy savings and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from water treatment of around 30%. Improvements in emerging water-treatment technologies are likely to lead to further savings, which could help increase the efficiency of urban water supply.
- Greater participation and technological innovation may improve waste management in Naples A participatory approach to waste management has been tested in Naples, Italy, a city which has experienced ongoing problems with the collection of municipal waste. This study tested a toolkit, which uses stakeholder engagement to improve waste-management decision-making. Residents and other stakeholders supported the use of a technological innovation to develop biomass fuel from municipal waste.
- A carbon-free future for the Canary Islands possible by 2050 The Canary Islands have the potential to become carbon neutral by 2050, a new study indicates. This could be achieved by shifting to a 100% renewable energy supply, improving energy efficiency and building new grid connections between islands. Energy solutions for small island regions, such as the Canaries, could act as role models for larger systems, as well as similar islands, the researchers suggest.
- Environmental hazards due to climate change set to increase in Europe — with regional differences Researchers have modelled the exposure to multiple hazards across different regions of Europe in relation to heat, cold, drought, wildfire, flooding and wind. The study indicated that, over the next century, environmental hazards are likely to increase, particularly along coastlines and on floodplains, and that south-western Europe is likely to be the worst-hit region.
- Environmental DNA survey technique for deepwater fish can complement trawl surveys A survey of deepwater fisheries off the coast of Greenland which used traces of fish DNA has produced similar results to trawl surveys and fishing catches. The ‘environmental DNA’ (eDNA) technique can therefore complement trawl data, the researchers say. It may be particularly useful for surveying large species — which can often avoid bottom trawls — or cryptic species1 in inaccessible ocean areas.
- Renewable energy’s role in national energy security rated by new index Researchers have developed a new indicator for policymakers, which shows the strength of renewable-energy technologies for electricity production in a country’s energy security. They compare their Renewable Energy Security Index (RESI) to the carbon footprint, in that it is easy to report and practical to use in energy policy.
- Supermarket food waste — alternative waste strategies can reduce the environmental impact Researchers have examined environmental and economic impacts of supermarket food waste in a new study. Bread and meat products made the largest contribution to the environmental footprint of the supermarket assessed. Alternative waste strategies, such as using bread waste as animal feed, have the potential to reduce these impacts.
- Screening tool developed to assess seismic risks from geothermal energy projects A new screening tool to assess the potential seismic risks (earthquake activity) from deep geothermal energy projects has been outlined in a recent study. The tool provides categories of seismicity risk for projects, which are dependent on factors including geological aspects, as well as social concern and location in relation to urban areas.
- LED lighting changes grassland spider and beetle communities; dimmers and timers may reduce the impact The influence of light-emitting diodes (LED) on grassland invertebrate communities has been assessed in a recent study. White LEDs increased the total abundance and changed the species of spiders and beetles recorded. Dimming lights and switching lights off during the middle of the night were the best ways of reducing the effects on beetle and spider numbers.
- New online oil spill risk tool provides local, specific information for coastal managers A new oil-spill risk-management system has been developed by researchers, which shows the likely effects of a coastal spill on the environment and economic activities for specific locations. It provides maps of oil-spill risk through a web portal and could help decision makers and emergency-response authorities protect the local environment and businesses through targeted and efficient planning and responses.
- Managing water resources for an uncertain future: new method of robust planning Water-supply planning that considers the preferences of multiple stakeholders under uncertain and variable future conditions are more robust than planning decisions based on historical conditions, a recent study has stated. Using the Thames river basin in the UK as an example, the researchers present a new computer-modelling approach to assess which combinations of water-management measures best secure future water supply under a wide range of possible future conditions.
- New tool can help predict the impact of invasive alien species on native flora and fauna Researchers have developed a new metric to predict the ecological impacts of invasive alien species. The metric was calculated for a number of known invasive alien species and successfully predicted their impact on native species. The tool could be used to help inform the global management of invasive alien species.
- A 50% renewable-energy smart-grid solution for the UK A 50% renewable-energy supply, which is both profitable and secure, is possible for the UK’s electricity grid by just 2030 according to a new study. The researchers developed a plan for adapting and operating the UK’s electricity grid, designed to be flexibly controlled through smart-grid technology and to overcome uncertainties in renewable-energy supply and demand.
- Potentially toxic elements in European soils mapped by researchers A new study has mapped levels of chemical elements found in European agricultural soils. In most places, unusually high concentrations are linked to geology, such as high levels of arsenic in the Massif Central in France. Human activity is to blame in some small areas, for example high concentrations of mercury were found near London and Paris. Abnormal concentrations, both too low and too high, could pose an environmental risk. This new data can be used in conjunction with the REACH Regulation1 and can help identify areas where action may be needed in relation to toxic elements in the environment.
- Renewable-energy technologies can help meet the increased cooling demand in cities due to climate change The available and emerging renewable technologies suitable for urban environments have been assessed in a recent study. Wind and solar technology can now be integrated into building design, and smart grids and metering can more efficiently manage energy production and demand at a local level. Investing in community-level renewable-energy projects can, therefore, help meet the future energy needs of towns and cities.

- Chinese supply of critical raw materials could pose long-term risks to European wind- and solar-energy industries A recent study has analysed risks to European renewable industries from the Chinese supply of critical raw materials. The offshore wind sector was found to be the most vulnerable of the renewable industries to supply risks. EU and industry strategies should be able to deal with these supply risks in the short term, but there are potential long-term risks to solar and wind sectors. The development of alternative technologies less reliant on these raw materials, and methods to recycle these materials is, therefore, a priority.

- Study suggests anaerobic digestion may reduce microplastics in sewage sludge European policy permits the application of nutrient-rich sewage sludge on agricultural land as a means of recycling1. However, contamination of sludge with microplastics may pose a risk to ecosystems. This study looked at the characteristics of microplastics in sewage sludge after three types of waste-water treatment, finding that anaerobic digestion should be explored as a method of microplastic reduction.
- Separate waste-water treatment of urine could have lower environmental impact than centralised, combined waste-water treatment Municipal wastewater is a major source of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment. Results from a recent study suggest that collecting and treating urine separately from other forms of sewage could be a cost-effective way to reduce the harmful effects of pharmaceuticals on the environment, while also providing a source of nutrients for fertilising agricultural crops.
- A simple and effective energy-auditing method for SMEs Researchers have developed a straightforward approach to help small to medium enterprises (SMEs) analyse their energy use and increase efficiency. They tested the methodology on 280 businesses in Europe, which, as a result, invested more than €10m in energy-saving measures. The measures reduced energy use by 6 500 toe (tonnes of oil equivalent) per year and avoided 13 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
- Closed-loop recycling of photovoltaic panel materials could mitigate up to 0.2% of Flanders’ annual environmental impact The development of future recycling technologies must be informed by data about products and materials that will enter the waste stream, but such forecasts are subject to a high level of uncertainty. In this study, researchers have proposed a methodology for predicting emerging waste materials, applying it to silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) panels. The findings show that closed-loop recycling — when post-consumer waste is recycled to make new products — of PV panel materials could mitigate up to 0.2% of the annual environmental impact of Flanders1, Belgium, if suitable technology was developed.
- New nanomaterials could purify water contaminated with heavy metals Researchers have analysed the ability of two organic nanomaterials to remove the heavy metal chromium from water. In the laboratory, the nanomaterials successfully took up around 95% of the chromium. Further work is needed to confirm the feasibility of using these nanomaterials to purify water in real-world conditions.
- Tall sedge in biofiltration systems removes the majority of dissolved phosphorus from greywater The pathways for removal of dissolved phosphorus within biofiltration systems have been examined in a new study. Over 95% of phosphorus was removed over the study period, with the majority of phosphorus stored within plants. The researchers say the findings demonstrate the value of using suitable plant species within biofiltration systems to treat polluted water.

Under optimal pH conditions, the method removed 100% of the arsenic, indicating the viability of this method for treating contaminated water.

- Breeding birds are better protected than wintering birds in Italian cropland Researchers have pinpointed hotspots for birds in an agricultural region of Italy. These show that hotspots for wintering birds are different to those for breeding birds — yet it is often only breeding birds’ locations that are considered in the design of protected areas. The researchers say their research highlights the importance of crop-dominated land for birds in the Mediterranean region.
- Additives used in alternative road salts may affect aquatic ecosystems A new study shows that run-off from de-icing road salts can affect freshwater aquatic ecosystems by increasing certain types of plankton. The study is the first to compare effects of the most popular road salt, sodium chloride, with the effects of alternative salts and additives used to increase de-icing efficiency. Based on their findings, the researchers recommend that magnesium chloride and salt additives are used cautiously near water bodies.

- Warming in the Channel leads to a decline in cold-water fish Results from a long-term study of fish communities in the Bay of Somme in the English Channel show that numbers of cold-water fish, such as dab and plaice, have been dropping since 1998, as sea temperatures have risen. The researchers say this is evidence of ‘tropicalisation’ in an English-Channel ecosystem. The findings may have implications for conservation policies in the Bay, which is a Marine Protected Area1 designated under the Natura 2000 programme, as well as other marine sites affected by warming.
- Natural enemies of crop pests will feature in the future of environmentally friendly farming Biological control agents are an environmentally-friendly way of controlling pests and diseases on crops and are advocated in the EU’s Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive1. - Urban vegetation can react with car emissions to decrease air quality in summer (Berlin) Researchers have shown that emissions from vehicles can react with emissions from urban trees and other plants, resulting in a decrease in air quality in cities in summer; this reduces the otherwise positive impacts of urban vegetation. The study, conducted in Berlin, showed that during a July heatwave, 20% of ozone concentrations were due to emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from vegetation interacting with other pollutants. To reduce this effect, lowering emissions of these other pollutants is crucial.
- New hazard index tool to aid risk assessment of exposure to multiple chemicals Evaluating the level of danger to human health from exposure to multiple chemicals in contaminated sites is a complex task. To address this difficulty, researchers have developed a new screening tool that can be incorporated into public health risk assessment, which may include polluted former industrial plants, waste dumps, or even land where pesticides have been used. This ‘hazard index’ approach indicates when risk to health is high, which organs are most affected, and where further evaluation should be conducted in the context of environmental or occupational exposure at such sites.
- Risk model suggests nanomaterials could reach toxic levels in San Francisco Bay area Although nanomaterials are already in widespread use, their risk to the environment is not completely understood. Researchers in the US have developed a next-generation risk-assessment model to better understand nanomaterials’ environmental impact. Applied to the San Francisco Bay area, the model predicted that even soluble nanomaterials could accumulate at toxic levels.
- Insights for urban planning — constructed wetlands sited near industry exposed to high levels of pollution Constructed wetlands serve as a cost-effective and multi-purpose option for storm-water treatment in urban landscapes, offering flood protection as well as wildlife habitat. However, a new study shows that when nearby land use includes industry, wetlands can accumulate high levels of pollution and potentially become toxic to wildlife. - UV water treatment may increase antimicrobial activity of linezolid antibiotic UV treatment does not always turn hazardous water pollutants into harmless substances. Recent lab tests suggest that the toxicity of the antibiotic linezolid to microorganisms appeared to increase post-treatment. This research did find, however, that UV treatment successfully reduced the antimicrobial activity of four other antibiotics tested, plus four artificial sweeteners.
- Data gathered by the public on UK butterfly populations could be useful for conservation Researchers have compared the findings of a citizen-science project and a long-running butterfly monitoring scheme in the UK to gain insights into the reliability of data gathering by the public. They found that — contrary to the scepticism with which such projects are sometimes viewed — much of the citizen-recorded data agreed with the findings of more formal monitoring, particularly for species often found in gardens. This indicates that mass-participation sampling not only provides a valuable tool for public engagement, but, in this case, could also provide valid data to inform butterfly conservation.

- New tools for improved river assessment and monitoring are likely to inform future management strategies Sustainable river management is increasingly informed by hydromorphological stream assessments — evaluations and classifications of stream conditions which account for both hydrological (the movement, distribution and quantity of water) and geomorphological (the processes and forms deriving from the interactions of water and sediment movement) features. In order to provide a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of river character and dynamics, scientists have developed three novel methods. Together, these tools represent a promising technique for conducting collaborative assessment and monitoring of river conditions in Europe.
- Study investigates attitudes of soil-remediation experts to phytoremediation An investigation into the attitudes of Canadian soil-remediation experts has shown that they tend to prefer conventional remediation methods over phytoremediation — which relies on plants to clean soils — despite evidence that the latter can have advantages. The researchers behind the study highlight that this ‘status-quo bias’ poses a barrier to the uptake of novel technologies such as phytoremediation, and that scientists may need to find different ways of disseminating evidence to increase the use of new techniques among practitioners.
- OFFICAIR project finds seasonal variation in indoor air quality in modern office buildings A new study aimed at increasing knowledge of indoor air quality (IAQ) in recently built or refurbished office buildings has found that levels of pollutants are mostly within World Health Organization (WHO) air-quality guidelines, however they vary between seasons. In addition, some levels of particulate matter were found to exceed WHO guideline values. The OFFICAIR project was funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme.
- Waste-water analysis highlights exposure to endocrine-disrupting phthalate plasticisers Researchers in Spain have analysed waste water to calculate levels of exposure to phthalates in individuals. The calculations showed that levels of four types of phthalate exceeded safe daily limits in some of the sites studied, with levels of exposure in children being of particular concern. Using the results of waste-water analysis in this way can identify areas where action may need to be taken to lower exposure.

Overall, the study estimates that a total of 1 540 000 tonnes of mercury have been released; three-quarters of this since 1850, and 78 times more than was released through natural causes over this period. - Floods due to rising sea levels may mobilise arsenic from contaminated soils New research has shown that flooding of soils contaminated with arsenic, which may occur as sea levels rise due to climate change, could lead to the mobilisation of this toxic element in the environment. The study shows that arsenic is more stable in soil flooded with saltwater, compared to river water, as salt stabilises mineral oxides and could inhibit microbial activity. However, microbes that transform arsenic into water-soluble forms may adapt to saline conditions, and the risk of arsenic entering waters due to rising sea levels should receive further attention.

- Sustainable urban drainage systems: green roofs and permeable paving compared in southern Italy A new study has looked at the potential of green infrastructure to compensate for the effects of soil sealing generated by urban development. It investigates how green roofs and permeable paving could contribute to flood mitigation in southern Italy. - Processing London’s local food waste in an anaerobic digester avoids 3.9 tonnes of GHG emissions Analysis of the operation of a novel, micro-scale anaerobic digester has shown that this technology could provide a useful means of processing food waste in urban areas. The study found that the digester, located in London and fed mainly with local food waste, avoided 3.9 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, while providing biogas for cooking, heat and power. Anaerobic digestion on this scale could play a part in reducing the amount of food waste that goes to landfill1 and contribute to the circular economy.
- Antibiotic resistance genes traced from manure to soil and water on Finnish farms A new study has investigated the movement of antibiotic resistance genes between farm animals, soil and water in Finland. The results show that many of these genes are spread from animals to the soil through manure application; however, these genes do not appear to persist in soil. The study suggests that practices that minimise the use of antibiotics, as used in Finland, may lead to lower levels of clinically relevant resistance genes in agricultural soils.

- Potential contamination of copper oxide nanoparticles and possible consequences on urban agriculture Researchers have assessed the phyto-toxic effects of copper nanoparticles on vegetables grown within urban gardens, comparing increasing doses of these nanoparticles to simulate potential aerial deposition to extreme pollution of CuO-NP in a range of increasing exposure periods. Lettuce and cabbage absorbed high amounts of copper nanoparticles, after 15 days of exposure, which interfered with photosynthesis, respiration and also reduced growth. - Fibres from polyester clothes could be more damaging to marine life than microbeads Tiny polyester fibres, which are washed into rivers, lakes and seas every time we do our laundry could cause more harm to animals than plastic microbeads, finds a new study. The researchers looked at the effect of microbeads and fibres on a small crustacean called Ceriodaphnia dubia, which lives in freshwater lakes. They found that although both types of plastic were toxic, microfibres caused more harm. Both microplastics stunted the growth of the animals, and reduced their ability to have offspring; microfibres, however, did this to a greater degree, and also caused noticeable deformities in the crustacean’s body and antennae.

Three case studies demonstrate how SAGI can enhance our understanding of salinity-mediated ecological impacts on aquatic macroinvertebrate communities.
- Adding aviation to the Emissions Trading System limited some of the sector's CO2 emissions growthAviation is the most carbon-intensive mode of transport. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from international aviation must fall by 41–96% by 2050 (against 2005 levels) to meet the Paris Agreement 2°C targets. In 2012 the EU included aviation in its Emissions Trading System (ETS) to promote emissions reduction. While absolute emissions continued to rise, this study finds that they fell in flights covered by the ETS – when compared to those not covered – especially for short-haul flights (under 1 000 kilometres) and low-cost airlines.
- Wildfires linked to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Mediterranean Sea sedimentsPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are potentially dangerous chemicals that can accumulate in ocean sediments and damage marine ecosystems. This study looks at PAH concentrations in sediment samples taken from across the Mediterranean Sea over a 32-year period. The researchers report medium-to-high levels of PAHs, especially in the western basin, with wildfires as the primary origin.
- Risk assessment of endocrine disruptors must take their combined effect into accountAnalysis of a Swedish study of pregnant mothers and their children has shown that more than half were exposed to unsafe levels of a mixture of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) associated with language delay. Researchers behind the analysis argue that risk assessments should consider the cumulative effects of such combinations to reflect real-life exposure. Integrating experimental and epidemiological evidence, they propose a methodology that could inform chemical regulations.
- Circular economy in the construction industry - policy, practice and potential for progressThe promotion of a circular economy is key to the European Green Deal – and the construction industry is a high priority. This study considers key factors in this transition, based on interviews with a range of stakeholders from five European countries. It looks at how policy instruments and market-led initiatives apply different strategies, how well these achieve sustainability goals, and what is needed to increase uptake in applying circular-economy principles to the building sector.
- Micronutrients in agricultural products - EU trade in iron, zinc and vitamin A in food and livestock feedWorldwide trade in food products affects international resource use, distribution of ecological impacts, environmental footprints and food security. This study focuses on the role of EU trade in vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) within food and livestock feed. The researchers report that EU trade with regions facing dietary micronutrient deficiencies includes large imports of iron in animal feed and significant exports of vitamin A in food products.
- How do regional environmental policies influence industrial waste export intensity?A study analyses regional export intensity of hazardous industrial waste within Spain. Using data collected from 17 Spanish regions over a 10- year period, the results show that regional environmental policies and waste taxes can be important determinants, in combination with local industrial/ production structures and socio-economic factors.
- Twenty years of ecotoxicology studies - review finds focus is on a narrow range of potentially hazardous substancesUnderstanding the effects of chemical pollutants is critical for developing effective policy and regulation. This study examines 20 years of scientific literature to assess how well it covers the range of potentially harmful substances and what changes can be seen over the period. The researchers report that relatively few chemicals dominate the published literature, and that changes in representation can be observed – such as increasing interest in pharmaceuticals.
- Fertiliser closed periods can mitigate multiple pollution risksNitrogen-based agricultural fertilisers can cause water and air pollution. Measures under the EU Nitrates Directive aim to control some of these through specific ‘closed periods’, when fertiliser use is limited. This study assesses how effectively closed fertiliser periods across Europe in 2019–20 mitigated the highest risk periods for pollution from nitrate, organic material, nitrous oxide and ammonia. The researchers conclude that measures to control nitrate pollution can reduce other risks.
- More cost-effective conservation policies risk poorer performance under climate change uncertaintyCurrent conservation policy design needs to account for uncertainty over expected climate change impacts. This study assesses potential conservation policies for grasshoppers in a north German state and evaluates their effectiveness across possible future scenarios. The researchers conclude that a trade-off exists between policies that perform better under the most likely conditions, and those that perform better in worst-case scenarios.
- A ‘life zone’ model of climate change predicts widespread ecosystem changeClimate models are crucial to understanding likely future conditions under climate change, however, their implications for individual ecosystems are often unclear. This study uses high-resolution data to model areas with similar plant and animal communities – or ‘life zones’ – under historic, current and future scenarios, and to analyse change across these periods. The researchers report that with ‘business as usual’ carbon emissions, over 40% of the earth’s land area could experience a change in life zone by 2080.
- Patterns of land-use change in Mediterranean mountain regions highlight economic and geographic driversThe mountain areas of Mediterranean Europe have come under increased pressure from socioeconomic change over the last 100 years. This has led to significant and ongoing changes in land-use patterns, threatening management systems that have been established over centuries. This study aims to identify the major patterns of change, their environmental implication, and the drivers behind them, in order to inform policy decisions.
- Coastal ecosystems - carbon stores lost when marshland replaces forest may never be recapturedAs sea levels rise due to global climate change, coastal ecosystems are being transformed. Migrating marshlands were assumed to capture carbon as marshes quickly accumulate carbon in their soils, suggesting a possible increase of carbon storage across the landscape. However, this study finds that where forests turn into marsh, the long-term loss of above-ground carbon (trees and shrubs) can outweigh this effect and may never be recaptured. As marsh soils must survive centuries before they can offset forest carbon loss, marsh migration results in a net loss of carbon that is overlooked in coastal budgets.
- Transition to forest may threaten 20% of European peatlandsMany northern European landscapes, including western Russia, are covered either by carbon-rich wetlands on thick peat soils, or by forests typically on thin organic soils – depending on the climatic and hydrological conditions. This study suggests that climate change and drainage can cause persistent shifts from one ecosystem to the other. Due to climate change, forests could overgrow peatlands on approximately 20% of European raised bogs, leading to the release of around 4% of European soil organic carbon. - Plastic hospital waste can be recycled into new medical devicesEach year, hospitals in the Netherlands generate about 1.3 million kilograms of plastic waste from polypropylene wrapping paper on surgical instruments. Researchers have suggested that this waste could be turned into new medical devices. They recovered surgical wrapping paper from the operating theatre at a hospital in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The waste was melted into solid blocks, granulated and injection moulded into new medical products.
- Urban flood mitigation - blue-green roofs using forecast-based technology could reduce flooding from extreme rainfallGreen roofs are a promising urban environmental technology; however, they can be vulnerable to dry conditions and have limited ability to store rainwater during extreme weather events. Enhanced ‘blue-green’ roof systems can address these shortcomings. This study assesses the potential of forecast-based valves, which drain the water when high rainfall is expected, to improve blue-green roof performance in flood mitigation, drought tolerance and temperature reduction during heatwaves.
- Air pollution exposure may increase severity and fatality of COVID-19 infectionsResearchers evaluate the increased risk of severe and fatal COVID-19 in those patients exposed to air pollutants. This study uses data from hospitals in Catalonia, Spain, to assess whether patients from more polluted areas were more likely to have a severe or fatal COVID-19 response. It finds that exposure to high levels of particulates (microscopic airborne particles) increases the risk of severe disease and death.
- Mining waste - study recommends stringent bonds to cover clean-up costsAbandoned mines can leave a toxic legacy that must be decontaminated. Firms may be legally obliged to cover the cost, but can escape this obligation by declaring bankruptcy. Governments must then take responsibility and fund the clean-up. ‘Environmental bonds’ – deposits paid to government – can encourage firms to meet their obligation and to minimise waste during operation, a new study shows. Carried out by researchers in Canada, the study focuses on the North American context, but the findings are also relevant for the EU.
- Evaluating green jobs - a framework for understanding relationships between employment and biodiversityPolicy efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss often view expanding green jobs as a win-win scenario with economic and environmental benefits. However, there is no universally-accepted definition of the term ‘green job’, and relationships between employment and biodiversity can be complex and multifaceted. This study presents a new analytical tool to help visualise these dynamics and better understand the role of different jobs in transitioning to a sustainable economy.
- Study shows how warming scenarios will affect global aridity and impact species rangesA new study modelling the spatial shifts of global aridity under high- level warming suggests that changes in water availability – in addition to temperature change – will significantly influence the distribution of terrestrial species. As habitable areas shift and shrink for many species, the most effective location of protected areas will need to be reconsidered. Amphibians are particularly at risk, especially under the most extreme warming scenarios.
- Life cycle assessment data - evaluating its potential for environmental labellingConsumers need information to be able to make sustainable, environment-friendly choices about products and services. Life cycle assessment (LCA) data offers comprehensive information, but can be difficult to understand, due to multiple impact categories and measurements given in technical units. This study, however, finds that consumers can effectively evaluate this information and attempts to simplify it are not always successful – and that different presentations can affect how it is interpreted.
- Effectiveness of Spanish protected areas varies by legal designation and governanceProtected areas (PAs) are a critical tool for conserving biodiversity, however, factors influencing their effectiveness can be complex. While other studies in Spain have considered the whole country and PAs in general, this study differentiates between PA types, regional administrations, and other variables. The researchers note relevant differences across these factors and support analyses at this level of detail to inform effective policy development.
- Assessing electric vehicle impacts - the need for up-to-date electricity dataRatios of fossil, renewable and nuclear energy are rapidly changing in European countries, and the grid mix fluctuates daily. Electricity data is of key importance to life cycle assessments of electric cars – for example, their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be higher when charged from a high- fossil mix. A new analysis suggests that accurate assessments require new, up-to-date electricity emissions data.
- Tracing consumption of wood, food and bio-based material to source countries, AustriaWith globalised trade, the environmental impacts of agriculture, logging and manufacturing often occur not in the country of consumption, but outside. Acknowledging the importance of linking products and impacts, researchers in Austria have developed a new method to trace the origins of products based on biomass. The study finds that just over half the country's 'biomass footprint' is domestic, some is imported from other EU countries, and a significant amount (7.6%) originates from outside the EU.
- Facilitating development of renewable energy communities - recommendations for developing legal frameworksThe 2018 recast of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) includes obligations to facilitate renewable energy communities (RECs). These commitments are currently being transposed into legislation in several Member States (MSs). This study discusses key factors in the implementation of RECs to consider when developing these legislative instruments. Researchers provide recommendations on socio-technical issues relating to complementarity, proximity, incumbents (businesses with central responsibilities in existing energy systems) and inclusivity.
- Supporting biodiversity - study highlights cost of more diverse grassland seed mixturesIntensive production has been linked to dramatic biodiversity loss in agricultural lands. In productive grassland – for grazing or hay – plant- species diversity can support diversity at higher levels (for example insects and birds) and contribute to more sustainable milk and meat production. Land managers can sow seed to increase diversity. New research, however, shows that diverse seed mixtures1 are often more expensive. Reducing the cost could be an effective option for policymakers to support an increase in plant diversity in grasslands and the restoration of semi-natural grasslands.
